Flathed animated movie from Blokkhed.

Hi there, a bit slow in posting these days, the day job is a bit busy at the moment, plus I'm trying to get a lot of work onto Alamy as well. But Ihave finally edited together a very rough cut of my Flathed animated movie [above]. This is a long on-going project and may or may not be finished. The little Flathed man is lost on a cuboid world and faces many trials and tribulations. To be continued......

The Laboratory. Robot. Blokkhed. Matthew Chattle. Concept art.

This is a close-up of the Blokkbot robot in the laboratory undergoing some sort of devilish process that involves him being immersed in boiling liquid, a process so complicated even I don't understand how it works.

Illustration. Blokkhed. 1960s. The Beatles. Music. Caricature.

Here are 'The Heds' and they're growing their hair. Again, they shouldn't be confused with any popular four piece from the 1960s, no not at all.....

Illustration. Blokkhed. 1960s. The Beatles. Music. Caricature.

Here's the 'With the Heds' album cover from 'The Heds' or 'The Flat Four' as they were sometimes known. Not to be confused with any other 1960s beat combo. But a group called The Beatles were quite good as well.

Mid Century Modern. Print. Illustration. Design. 1950s.

I'm exploring 1950s design at the moment and a lot of fun it is too. As I said before I'm going to have prints made for sale [somewhere, maybe Etsy].

Mid Century Modern. Pattern. Illustration. Design. 1950s.

A variation on semi-circles and squares. I intend to create prints of this sort of work and start an Etsy store. I'll keep you posted!

Mid Century Modern. Pattern. Design. 1950s.

Mid Century Modern decor was inspiration for this piece. I'm enjoying this series of work at the moment, I have to get back to the animation soon, but as always a new inspiration has come along. The Populuxe era had it all, style for its' own sake and wild and eventually mis-placed optimism for the future. More to come in this vein in the next weeks....

Sputnik. 1957. Mid Century Modern. Illustration

1957 and the world got smaller. Sputnik raised tension between East and West and started the space race. Mid Century Modern design and art took inspiration from this event and so have I.
A Cold War in the vacuum of space.

The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit. Mad Men. Illustration.

The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit. Tom Rath is one of those company men, one amongst many. A stereotype perhaps, but actually all those clones have their own story to tell.

The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit. Mad Men. Mid-Century Modern.

I'm going through withdrawal symptoms waiting for the third season of Mad Men at the moment, but I'll just have to wait. In the meantime I've just read "The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit" by Sloan Wilson. A novel about Tom Rath a company man. It seems at first to be all about 1950s conformity when it isn't really. Any seemingly conformist person, due to their outward physical conformity [the suit] can really mask a man with a complex history. Don Draper is in the same mold and is an even more complex character. I like the era from 1950 to the early sixties [before they started swinging], the Cold War and the Space Race and everything that went with the times is so fascinating.

Look at these little men running for their lives. Just like 'The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit'. Where are they going?

Shadow. FlatHed. Character Design. Illustration.

A Flathed character from Blokkhed. Another type of work that I'm doing at the moment and I'm thinking of putting together some images in a children's book form.
