The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit. Mad Men. Mid-Century Modern.
I'm going through withdrawal symptoms waiting for the third season of Mad Men at the moment, but I'll just have to wait. In the meantime I've just read "The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit" by Sloan Wilson. A novel about Tom Rath a company man. It seems at first to be all about 1950s conformity when it isn't really. Any seemingly conformist person, due to their outward physical conformity [the suit] can really mask a man with a complex history. Don Draper is in the same mold and is an even more complex character. I like the era from 1950 to the early sixties [before they started swinging], the Cold War and the Space Race and everything that went with the times is so fascinating.
